Peter Molyneux Has a Brain – Calls Xbox One’s Kinect “Unnecessary”


In an interview with Edge, Peter Molyneux says that “I actually wish Kinect wasn’t a requirement”. The man behind many 90′s classics and 00′s mediocrity tells Edge that “It feels like an unnecessary add-on to me. Maybe it’s because we’re in England, and it doesn’t really use the TV stuff, but it feels more and more like a joke. My son and I sit there saying random things at it, and it doesn’t work. They could cost-reduce it [by removing Kinect]. I’m sure they’re going to release an Xbox One without Kinect. It would be unthinkable that they wouldn’t”. As the amount of Kinect-supporters in the developer-community keeps on rising, the opinion of this 22Cans creator hardly matters in the grand scheme of things. When you’re talking about Microsoft, you are going to need much more than Peter Molyneux to change their mind.  

It’s funny to think that the man who tried to make Milo work so hard on the 360 has such harsh things to say about the Kinect. Molyneux also supported the idea of Fable: The Journey using Kinect. Maybe the novelty of the hardware is finally starting to wear off after being included in every Xbox One-console. Peter Molyneux has become more critical (or at least more vocal) of new fads recently, previously speaking against free-to-play-games, saying that “I hate the term ‘free-to-play’, and I hate the way the model is burning through our consumers and the tender shoots of new gamers”.



I wonder how much cheaper they could make the Xbox One if they took out the Kinect. I know I don’t want it, and the main reasons why I am not interested in the console are it’s price and the fact that I need to have the Kinect in my house. Especially outside U.S where most of the TV-things simply do not work, it feels like there is little point in the Kinect. I’m just surprised that Molyneux isn’t jumping in on the Kinect-train as he could probably come up with some strange idea for it, overhype it and then disappoint everyone with a mediocre game.
